Overview of the site

How do I create a brochure, flyer, poster, or other material?

Overview

Here you will find the resources to support the marketing of patient care-related specialties to consumers, patients and referring physicians. The ToolKit provides background information on the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System brand, project request forms and frequently asked questions, templates and examples, photos, and logos. When using this site keep in mind that it was designed so you can "shop" for marketing elements and add them to your "cart", also known as your Lightbox. At the end of your session you can visit your Lightbox and download your selected items.

How do I create a brochure, flyer, poster, or other material?

Creating marketing material can be easy and even fun! Follow the steps below for a quick tutorial:

Step 1: Read the brand guidelines. This will save a lot of time and effort for you and the marketing team if you are familiar with these.

Step 2: Select and download a template. The templates are available in Publisher and Adobe InDesign, and you are free to choose either option based on your computer’s capability. Publisher is part of the Microsoft 2010 program, but Adobe InDesign is an external program that your department will need to purchase.

Based on the material you would like to create, choose the template that will best meet your needs. The marketing team has created various templates and provided examples for posters, flyers, tri-fold brochures, bi-fold brochures, and more! There are opportunities to be creative with the layout, as long as you follow the brand guidelines.

Step 3: Select and download the photos you would like to use. Any of the pictures on the Marketing DIY site are available for your use. As an organization we are trying to stay away from clip art in order to personalize our message and vision. If your department does not have any photos, contact the marketing team and we will work with you and a professional photographer to enhance your department’s visual presence.

Step 4: Work with your department to ensure the material’s content meets the appropriate audience. For example, if you are creating a brochure to hand out to patients, it needs to be presented at a 5th grade reading level. Also, are you trying to reach a Spanish speaking population? The marketing team can work with you to get your finalized materials translated. When your material is ready to be approved by the Marketing Team, please send it to mktg@uic.edu. Thank you!
